GREATER SPLANCHNIC NERVE

ORIGIN:  Thoracic sympathetic trunk

COURSE/DISTRIBUTION: This nerve is preganglionic containing both sensory and motor fibers from T5-T9 spinal cord segments. It descends on the vertebral bodies of the thoracic vertebrae and then pierces the crus of diaphragm to reach the celiac plexus. At the celiac plexus, it relays in the celiac ganglion or the aorticorenal ganglion. The postganglionic fibers then are distributed via the branches of the celiac plexus to the tissues in the alimentary tract.

BRANCHES:

bullet

To descending abdominal aorta

bullet

To celiac ganglion.

FUNCTIONAL COMPONENTS:

bullet

GVE sympathetic vasomotor fibers from roots T5-9.

bullet

GVA fibers from T5-T9.

ROOT: The vasomotor sympathetic fibers originate from the ventral part of the intermediolateral horn of T5-T9 spinal cord segments. Also the dorsal part of the intermediolateral horn provides the pseudounipolar sensory neurons whose cell bodies lie in the spinal ganglia T5-9.
