COURSE/DISTRIBUTION: This nerve is the terminal
branch of the maxillary division of trigeminal nerve which begins at the
inferior orbital fissure. This nerve transverses the infraorbital groove in the
maxillary bone at the floor of the orbit to enter the face through the
infraorbital foramen by passing under the levator labii superioris. It then
divides into branches, which supply the lower eye lid (palpebral branch), upper
lip (labial branch), nose (nasal branch), mucous membrane of cheek and then
provides branches which communicate with facial nerve. It also gives major
branches to the upper jaw- the middle superior alveolar nerve and anterior
superior alveolar nerve.
ROOT: Sensory nucleus of trigeminal nerve at floor of fourth ventricle of the pons.
