INFERIOR MESENTERIC PLEXUS

DESCRIPTION: The plexus is an extension of the celiac plexus by extension of the aortic plexus. It lies on the inferior mesenteric artery and may be considered a secondary plexus of the aortic plexus since it follows the inferior mesenteric branch of the aorta. It is formed by the branches of the following plexuses

bullet

Aortic plexus

bullet

1st lumbar splanchnic nerve

bullet

3rd lumbar splanchnic nerve

It also forms secondary (or tertiary) plexuses around its branches as follows

bullet

Left colic secondary plexus (descending colon)

bullet

Sigmoid plexus (sigmoid colon)

bullet

Superior rectal plexus (rectum)

Its inferior mesenteric ganglion is placed at the root of the inferior mesenteric artery

It does not ordinary seem to contain parasympathetic fibers, and if any, not of vagal origin. But parasympathetic fibers from sacral outflow but ascend to reach it from where they may be distributed to the hindgut.

BRANCHES:

bullet

Branches to secondary plexus as enumerated above

bullet

Left colic secondary plexus (descending colon)

bullet

Sigmoid plexus (sigmoid colon)

bullet

Superior rectal plexus (rectum)

FUNCTIONAL COMPONENTS:

bullet

GVE sympathetic vasomotor fibers from roots T5-12.

bullet

GVE parasympathetic fibers from S2-4

bullet

GVA sympathetic sensory fibers whose cell bodies are placed in the T5-12 spinal ganglia through the thoracic splanchnic nerves.

ROOT: Parasympathetic motor fibers are from sacral outflow (S2-4). The vasomotor sympathetic fibers originate from the ventral part of the intermediolateral horn of T5-T12 spinal cord segments while their sensory branches have their pseudounipolar cell bodies in the spinal ganglia T5-T12, and their roots in the dorsal part of the intermediolateral horn of T5-12.
