CELIAC PLEXUS

DESCRIPTION: This is the largest autonomic plexus in the body and it is formed around the celiac trunk and the root of the superior mesenteric artery at the level of T12 and L1 vertebrae. It is placed behind the stomach and omental bursa but anterior to the crura of the diaphragm and the origin of the abdominal aorta. It actually consist of two celiac ganglia joined together by interganglionic branches and it has many subsidiary  or secondary plexuses which are connected to it.

It is formed by the following

bullet

Celiac prolongation of hepatic branch of anterior vagus

bullet

Celiac branch of posterior vagus

bullet

Greater splanchnic nerve (sympathetic-T5-T9

bullet

Lesser splanchnic nerve (T10-11)

bullet

Least splanchnic nerve (T12)

BRANCHES:

Plexus connections or secondary plexuses are

bullet

Phrenic plexus

bullet

Suprarenal plexus

bullet

Splenic pleus

FUNCTIONAL COMPONENTS:

bullet

GVA sympathetic fibers with cell bodies in T5-T12 spinal ganglia.

bullet

GVE sympathetic fibers from T5-T12 ventral part of intermediolateral horn, mostly running in the greater splanchnic nerve, lesser splanchnic nerve and least splanchnic nerve.

bullet

GVE parasympathetic fibers from dorsal nucleus of vagus.

bullet

GVE parasympathetic fibers from the inferior salivatory nucleus.

ROOT: Dorsal nucleus of vagus, inferior salivatory nucleus, all of the upper medulla in the vagal trigone of rhomboid fossa and T5-T12 spinal cord segments.
