PELVIC SPLANCHNIC NERVES  (Nervi erigentes)

ORIGIN: S2-4 ventral rami

COURSE/DISTRIBUTION: These nerves are ventral rami of S2-4 nerves and are mixed motor and sensory nerves to pelvic structures such as

Motor

bullet

Smooth muscle of rectum

bullet

Smooth muscle of urinary bladder

bullet

Urethral sphincter

bullet

Hindgut (terminal transverse colon, sigmoid colon rectum and upper part of anal canal)

Vasomotor

bullet

Penis for erection through erectile tissue and ischiocavernosus

bullet

Clitoris for erection through erectile tissue and ischiocavernosus

bullet

Testis

bullet

Ovary

bullet

Uterine tubes

bullet

Uterus

Sensory

bullet

Hindgut

bullet

Urinary bladder

BRANCHES:

bullet

To testis

bullet

To ovary

bullet

To penile erectile tissue (corpora cavenosa)

bullet

To clitoral erectile tissue (corpora cavernosa)

bullet

To other pelvic structures (urinary bladder, rectum, anus, sigmoid and descending colon, terminal transverse colon,

bullet

Uterus and uterine tubes)

bullet

Vagina.

FUNCTIONAL COMPONENTS:

bullet

GVA parasympathetic fibers, which are for pain and general sensation in all areas of supply from dorsal aspect of intermediomedial horn of S2-4 spinal cord segments.

bullet

GVE parasympathetic fibers for vasomotor and smooth muscle function, from ventral part of intermediomedial horn of S2-4.

ROOT: The vasomotor and smooth muscle motor parasympathetic fibers originate from the ventral part of the intermediomedial horn of S2-4 spinal cord segments while their sensory branches have their pseudounipolar cell bodies in the spinal ganglia S2-4 and their roots in the dorsal part of the intermediomedial horn of corresponding spinal cord segments.
