A region of the body which extends from the level of the thoracic inlet at the plane which passes from the superior border of T1 to superior aspect of manubrium sterni to reach the thoracic outlet at the level of the diaphragm. Its anterior part is also called chest. It contains vital organs such as heart and lungs.

It contains the following

BONES: Thoracic cage containing 12 pairs of ribs and sternum

Muscles: External intercostal internal intercostal intimate intercostal innermost intercostal subcostal transversus thoracis levatores costarum serratus posterior superior serratus posterior inferior diaphragm

Arteries: Thoracic aorta and branches, pulmonary trunk, left and right pulmonary arteries, ascending aorta

Veins: Inferior vena cava, and tributaries, left pulmonary vein and right pulmonary vein

Nerves: Intercostal nerves, vagus, left phrenic nerve, right phrenic nerve, parasympathetic fibers, sympathetic fibers.

Others-organs: heart, lungs, thoracic duct, esophagus,
