There are six artificial (imaginary) layers of the perineum by dissection as follows

Male Perineum

Layer 1: Skin of male perineum

Layer 2: Superficial fascia of male perineum- Colles fascia

Layer 3: Layer of superficial muscles of male perineum in superficial perineal pouch

Layer 4: Layer of deep muscles I of male perineum in deep perineal pouch

Layer 5: Layer of deep muscles II of male perineum in deep perineal pouch

Layer 6: Layer of pelvic outlet- bony pelvis

Female Perineum

Layer 1: Skin of female perineum

Layer 2: Superficial fascia of female perineum- Colles fascia

Layer 3: Layer of superficial muscles of female perineum in superficial perineal pouch

Layer 4: Layer of deep muscles I of female perineum in deep perineal pouch

Layer 5: Layer of deep muscles II of female perineum in deep perineal pouch
