Organ of respiration which is invaginated by the pleural cavity. It is paired and also extramediastinal.

They are suspended free in the pleural cavity with only their roots attached to the mediastinum. They are provided with apex, base, anterior margin, inferior margin, posterior surface, costal surface, and medial surface. They are also provides with a hilus which contains the root of the lungs.

Extent of the lungs

The apex of the lung extends to the root of the neck in the dome of pleura 3-5cm above the anterior part of the 1st rib and 1-2 cm above the medial 1/3 of the clavicle. Its base reaches T10 at the lateral aspect of the vertebral column. Medial surface of the lungs have important impressions from the mediastinum.

Arteries

Blood supply to the lungs and the bronchial tree are via the pulmonary artery and bronchial artery respectively. The pulmonary artery divides  with the bronchi and they lie on their posterior surfaces. They anastomose with branches of the bronchial artery. The arteries are therefore as follows
