Colon

 

That part of the large intestine which extends from the ascending colon to the sigmoid colon. It therefore consist of the following parts

Cecum

Ascending colon

Transverse colon

bullet

Descending colon

bullet

Sigmoid colon

bullet

Hepatic flexure

bullet

Splenic flexure

 

Arteries

It is supplied by the right colic artery (ascending colon), middle colic artery (transverse colon), left colic artery (descending colon), sigmoidal arteries (sigmoid colon). They are all branches of the inferior mesenteric artery.

 Veins

It is drained by corresponding veins - right colic vein (ascending colon), middle colic vein (transverse colon). Left colic vein (descending colon), sigmoidal vein (sigmoid colon). They all drain into the inferior mesenteric vein.

Parasympathetic fibers are through the vagi via the celiac plexus and the superior mesenteric plexus. They supply the colon up to the splenic flexure. The remaining is supplied by the pelvic parasympathetic outflow.

Sympathetic fibers are from the lumbar and pelvic splanchnic nerves.
