HIP JOINT

Joint action video

DESCRIPTION: The articular surfaces of this joint are the acetabulum of the hip bone having contributions from the three intrinsic bones of the hip- pubis, ilium and ischium. The acetabulum articulates with the rounded head of femur. It has a rim of fibrocartilagenous structure which is called the labrum acetabulare (cf with shoulder joint) around its margin. The hip joint has a strong fibrous capsule with further fortifications from articular ligaments.

LIGAMENTS:

NERVE SUPPLY:

BLOOD SUPPLY: Anastomoses around the hip joint involving the following

The anastomoses is formed as follows

The cruciate anastomoses may also take part in a little way

MOVEMENTS:

Flexion: By iliospoas assisted by pectineus, rectus femoris and sartorius.

Extension: By gluteus maximus and the hamstring muscles (biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus).

Lateral rotation: Short lateral rotators of the hip joint- they are 4 (cf rotator cuff in the shoulder). Piriformis, obturator internus, obturator externus and quadratus femoris. They all gain insertion to or close to the greater trochanter of the femur. Also gluteus maximus and sartorius may aid lateral rotation.

Medial rotation: Tensor fasciae latae and anterior parts of gluteus medius and minimus. Also the adductor muscles gracilis, adductor longus, adductor brevis and adductor magnus.

Abduction: By glutei minimus et medius, aided by sartorius and tensor fasciae latae.

Adduction: By the adductors (see above) assisted by pectineus.
