INTERPHALANGEAL JOINTS

Joint animation

DESCRIPTION: The articular surfaces of these joints are the heads of proximal (or middle) phalanges and the bases of the middle or distal phalanges. They have fibrous capsule which are strengthened by ligaments.

Interphalangeal joints are of two types-

Distal is between the middle row of phalanges and the distal row.

Proximal is between the proximal row of phalanges and the middle in 2-5 fingers.

In the thumb however, there is only one interphalangeal joint because there are only two phalanges (proximal and distal).

LIGAMENTS:

There are no dorsal ligaments for their position have been taken over by the extensor tendon running from the extensor expansion at the back of each metacarpophalangeal joint.

NERVE SUPPLY:

BLOOD SUPPLY: Superficial and deep palmar arch.

MOVEMENTS:

Flexion: All the tendons that cross the joints assist in flexionflexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus.

Extension: All the extensor tendons that cross the joint participate in  extending that joint- extensor digitorum, extensor indicis, extensor digiti minimi and extensor pollicis longus.

Precision grip. This is the position in which the metacarpophalangeal joints are all flexed while the interphalangeal joints are extended and it is due to the accommodation of the lumbricals and interossei on the extensor expansion at the back of the joints. The lumbricals and interossei cause simultaneously, flexion at the metacarpophalangeal joints, while encouraging (or directly) causing extension at the interphalangeal joints.
