BASILAR ARTERY

ORIGIN: Vertebral artery

COURSE/DISTRIBUTION:  This artery is formed by the coming together of the left and fright vertebral arteries at the lower aspect of the anterior surface of the pons. The basilar artery then moves up in the anteromedian septum of the pons to reach the upper border of the pons in cisterna pontis. Here it divides into its two terminal branches, the left and right posterior cerebral arteries. It is flanked in its course by the two abducens nerves inferiorly and two oculomotor nerves cranially.

BRANCHES:

  • Pontine branches
  • Labyrinthine artery
  • Anterior inferior cerebellar artery
  • Superior cerebellar artery
  • Posterior cerebral artery.
