ORIGIN:  Inferior belly: Upper border of scapula close to suprascapular notch and sometimes from the suprascapular ligament.

Superior belly: From the tendon under sternocleidomastoid.

 

INSERTION:  Inferior belly: Tendon under sternocleidomastoid

Superior belly: Lower border of the body of hyoid bone.

 

ACTION:  Depresses hyoid bone after its elevation; steadies the hyoid bone and retracts the bone and the larynx.

 

NERVE:  Superior belly- branches of superior ramus of ansa cervicalis; inferior belly is from the trunk of the ansa cervicalis.
