Sternum is the breast bone. It is found only in land animals.  It is also called mesosternum. The junction of the sternum with the manubrium is called the manubriosternal junction forming the sternal angle of Louis.

Sternum is divided into four segments called sternebrae

It has a tail called the xiphoid process or xiphisternum

Features of sternum

The sternum is provided with three important parts

Ligaments and joints of sternum

Sternoclavicular joint

Sternocostal joints

Sternal joints

BORDERS: Sternum has two lateral borders. The borders carry the facets for articulation with 2nd to 7th costal cartilages.

The manubrium has also two lateral borders and a superior border which carries the clavicular notch for articulating with clavicle. There is a jugular notch between the heads of the clavicles. The inferior border of the manubrium articulates with the sternal upper border to form the manubrosternal junction- a junction marked by the landmark called the sternal angle of Louis. It carries the demifacet for the 2nd costal cartilage and is a landmark for recognizing this junction and therefore for identifying intercostal aspects and numbers of ribs on a living or other subjects.

SURFACES: Sternum has three surfaces. One anterior and another posterior and superior surfaces. The superior surface articulates with the manubrium.
