Patella is a big sesamoid bone placed in the course of the quadriceps femoris, running from the femur and hip bone to the tibial tuberosity.  It is the largest sesamoid bone in the body.  It is a flat bone with its superior aspect forming a curve and its inferior forming a triangle.

BORDERS: The patella has three borders as follows

  •                     Superior border

  •                     Medial border

  •                     Lateral border

SURFACES: The patella has two surfaces

  • Anterior surface

  • Posterior surface
