Dorsal aspect

      Origin

            First dorsal interosseous muscle (D1) arises from the dorsal surfaces of metatarsal I & II.

             Second dorsal interosseous muscle (D2) arises from the dorsal surfaces of metatarsal II & III.

             Third dorsal interosseous muscle (D3) arises from the dorsal surfaces of metatarsal III & IV.

             Fourth dorsal interosseous muscle (D4) arises from the dorsal surfaces of metatarsal IV & V.

       Insertion

            Peroneus brevis is inserted to tuberosity of base of metatarsal V .

            Peroneus tertius is inserted to tuberosity of base of metatarsal V.

 

 

Plantar aspect

      Origin

            Second  plantar interosseous muscle (P2)arises from plantar surface of metatarsal III.

             Third plantar interosseous muscle (P3) arises from plantar surface of metatarsal IV.

             Fourth plantar interosseous muscle (P4)arises from plantar surface of metatarsal V.

      Insertion

            Flexor hallucis brevis is inserted into the base of metatarsal I at its two facets for the sesamoid bones.

            Tibialis anterior is inserted into the base of metatarsal I at its plantar surface.

            Peroneus longus is attached to the base of the metatarsal I at its plantar surface.

            Tibialis posterior is inserted into the bases of all metatarsals except the first.
