Dorsal

Origin

1st dorsal interosseous muscle arises by two heads. One from dorsal aspect of metacarpal I and the second from the dorsal aspect of metacarpal II.

2nd dorsal interosseous muscle arises from the dorsal aspect of metacarpal II and that of metacarpal III.

3rd dorsal interosseous muscle arises from the dorsal aspect of metacarpals II & IV

4th dorsal interosseous muscle arises from the dorsal aspect of metacarpals IV and V.

Insertion

Extensor carpi radialis longus is inserted into the dorsal aspect of the base of metacarpal II.

Extensor carpi radialis brevis is inserted into the dorsal aspect of the base of metacarpals II and III.

Extensor carpi ulnaris is inserted into the tubercle at the base of metacarpal V.

Palmar

Origin

1st palmar interosseous muscle, when present, arises from palmar surface of the metacarpal I.

2nd palmar interoseous muscle arises from the palmar surface of metacarpal II.

3rd palmar interosseous muscle arises from the palmar surface of metacarpal IV.

4th palmar interosseous muscle arises from the palmar surface of metacarpal V.

Thenar muscles

Adductor pollicis (transverse head) arises from  palmar surface of shaft of metacarpal III.

Adductor pollicis (oblique head) arises from base of metacarpal II and III.

Insertion

Opponens pollicis is inserted into palmar surface of metacarpal I.

Abductor pollicis longus inserted into palmar surface of base of metacarpal I

Flexor carpi radialis is inserted into the base of metacarpal II and III.

Opponens digiti minimi is inserted into the palmar aspect of shaft of metacarpal V.

Ligament

Pisometacarpal ligament is attached to the base of  metacarpal V.
